A Tribute to Chris Snow: A Life of Courage and Resilience
A Personal Reflection
Chris Snow, a long-time Calgary Flames front-office employee and assistant general manager, captured the hearts of many when he and his wife, Kelsie, publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in December 2019. Through Kelsie’s blog, Twitter posts, and podcast, they shared the harsh realities of Chris’s battle against a disease that gradually weakened his body but never defeated his spirit.
As I followed their journey, I often found myself reflecting on my own life and the trivial difficulties I faced. It was humbling to imagine what a bad day would look like for Chris Snow, who courageously fought against ALS with an unwavering determination. He underwent harsh and invasive treatments, offering his body to a clinical trial to help others even while knowing that his own fate was sealed. His selflessness and bravery were truly inspiring.
A Remarkable Display of Courage
In recent months, Chris Snow remained visible despite the challenges he faced. He attended significant Flames news conferences, signaling changes within the organization. His dedication to his work, even in the face of adversity, was truly remarkable. His determination never wavered, even as his health fluctuated. Chris continued to work, handling contracts for both the previous and current Flames regimes.
This unwavering dedication was not limited to his professional life. Craig Conroy, a colleague and close friend, and his wife, Jessie, played enormous roles in supporting the Snow family. Craig, who was promoted to general manager, brought Chris’s son, Cohen, to a Flames press conference to stand in for his father. The Conroys and other friends in their wide circle offered assistance whenever the Snow family needed help with their children, Willa and Cohen.
A Missed Opportunity
Reflecting on my interactions with Chris before his diagnosis, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret. I remember a conversation during which I praised Chris for his skills and expressed my belief in his potential to become an NHL general manager. Little did I know at the time that he had already received the devastating news about his illness. I felt chagrined and embarrassed when I later learned the truth.
It was during that same period, in December 2019, that Chris and Kelsie decided to share their story publicly. Despite the option to request privacy, they consciously chose to use their platform to raise awareness about ALS and to support research efforts. Their courage and determination to make a difference are a testament to their strength of character.
An Inspiring Journey
Kelsie’s blog and podcast became a window into the Snow family’s daily struggles and their unwavering resilience. Through heartbreaking moments and glimpses of joy, we witnessed Chris’s determination to hold onto a sense of normalcy. Despite the disease’s gradual toll on his body, he continued to ski, skate, and even mow the lawn.
The Snows’ journey touched the hearts of many. They were invited to throw out the first pitch at Fenway Park and presented the Norris Trophy at the NHL Awards. These moments of recognition and their focus on creating lasting memories highlight the strength and bravery it took to face each day. Chris’s efforts to maintain a sense of normalcy and his devotion to his family even in the final years of his life serve as an inspiring example to all.
A Lasting Legacy
Chris Snow’s legacy extends beyond his own family. His advocacy and fundraising efforts for ALS research have raised awareness and given hope to others affected by the disease. His determination to pave the way for a cure and his selflessness in offering his body for medical trials will impact countless lives. He leaves a noble and lasting legacy as a great fighter, a great father, and an inspiration to us all.
In memory of Chris Snow, may we continue to advocate for ALS research and support all those affected by this devastating disease.
