AC Milan to face Inter Milan in the Champions League Semifinals
The Rossoneri of AC Milan are set to host their city rivals Inter Milan for the third time in the history of the Champions League Semifinals. The two sides previously met in the semifinals in the 2002-03 season, with AC Milan knocking out Inter Milan. AC Milan went on to win the competition by defeating Juventus in penalties. Rafael Leao, the Portuguese winger, will miss the upcoming match for AC Milan due to a minor muscular injury. The tension-filled encounter will take place at San Siro in Milan, Italy, on May 10 at 3 p.m. EST.
How they got here
This season, AC Milan secured ten points in Group E, finishing three points behind Chelsea, who won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and 2-0 at San Siro. AC Milan clinched second place after 4-0 victories in the last two games against Dinamo Zagreb and Salzburg. They then moved past Tottenham in the round of 16, with Brahim Díaz providing the only goal of the tie in the first leg at San Siro. AC Milan then edged past Napoli in the quarterfinals, winning 1-0 in the first leg at home before extending the aggregate advantage two minutes before halftime in the Naples second leg.
Inter Milan started and concluded their Group C campaign with 2-0 defeats against Bayern Munich. The Nerazzurri remained unbeaten in between those losses, collecting ten points, including a crucial four against Barcelona, and advanced with a 4-0 home victory over Viktoria Plzen on Matchday 5. Inter Milan then edged past Porto in the round of 16, with a 1-0 home victory, before holding out for a goalless draw in Portugal. In the quarterfinals, they overcame Benfica with a 2-0 first-leg win away before drawing 3-3 at San Siro, where they led 3-1 until the 86th minute.
Team news
Stefano Pioli, the AC Milan coach, will miss Rafael Leao in the starting line-up due to a minor muscular injury. The Portuguese winger’s absence will be a significant loss, but Pioli is unwilling to take any risks. Simone Inzaghi, the Inter Milan coach, will have to make a difficult choice between two of the midfielders, Marcelo Brozovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Nicolo Barella.
Prediction
The AC Milan vs. Inter Milan match promises to be an anxiety-ridden encounter, similar to their 2002-03 Champions League Semifinals matchup. Both sides will be extra careful to avoid conceding goals in the first game.
Pick: AC Milan 0, Inter Milan 0.
