Introduction
Netflix’s Never Have I Ever completed the three-year journey of Devi Vishwakumar, played brilliantly by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, in its final season. The series beautifully portrayed the adolescent emotional turmoil through Devi’s life.
The Love Triangle
Throughout the show’s run, Devi’s journey has been pitted between jock Paxton Hall-Yoshida, and academic Ben Gross. The final season started with an awkward morning between Ben and Devi after having sex for the first time. Both characters struggle with their emotions and try to avoid each other during the summer break. Once school starts, Ben starts dating someone new, and that creates a rift between Devi and him. As the tumultuous year passes, they find their way back to being friends.
Senior Year
Devi is in the final stretch of getting into Princeton, her dream college. However, she faces multiple obstacles on the way. From accidentally injuring her teacher to getting romantically distracted by a bad boy, Ethan, who ruins her Princeton interview. Devi realizes Ethan is not the one for her after he steals from the Princeton representative. Although she ended up getting waitlisted from Princeton, we see a more matured Devi when she acknowledges and accepts her mistakes.
Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s Journey
Paxton starts his freshman year at Arizona State University but struggles to make friends and eventually drops out of college before coming back to his hometown. After taking up a job as a swim team assistant coach, Paxton helps Devi by providing her a good recommendation. However, Paxton eventually finds his calling as a teacher, gets back to college, and becomes a JV team teacher.
The Finale
The final episode of Never Have I Ever ends with a blissful Devi finally getting accepted into Princeton, and we see her leaving for college. The episode wrapped up the character’s stories, and we see Devi reuniting with her friends before leaving for college. However, Devi’s happiness is cut short as she realizes that Ben hasn’t come to the celebration. We see her finding a placard from season 1, reminding her of the feelings she had for Ben. Meanwhile, Ben’s in NYC, regretting not telling Devi his true feelings.
In the ultimate climax of the show, Ben surprises Devi at Nirmala’s wedding, flying across the country to declare his love. The show ends with the teenagers happily together embracing their new journey, Paxton becoming a teacher, and Devi’s friends starting their new journeys.
Conclusion
The show beautifully portrays the struggles of teenage romance through Devi’s journey, learning to deal with emotional turmoil while growing up.
