Raiders Include Waiver in Jimmy Garoppolo’s Contract that could Result in Cutting the QB
The Las Vegas Raiders made a significant move this offseason by replacing their quarterback Derek Carr with Jimmy Garoppolo, the former quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers. However, Garoppolo encountered an injury-plagued season in 2022, with a foot injury that kept him away from the game for most of the year. According to reports, Garoppolo suffered a foot injury even before signing on with the Raiders. When he signed his contract with the team, the Raiders included a waiver called “Addendum G,” which provides protection to the team in case Garoppolo’s foot injury continues to trouble him. This measure could lead to the Raiders cutting the quarterback.
The Waiver and Release Attached as Addendum G
The Addendum G, noted in Garoppolo’s contract, is centered on the foot injury that has been preventing him from playing football. The addendum states that Garoppolo admits that the pre-existing injury would not enable him to pass the team’s physical test. Furthermore, he assumes all risks of further injury, including “permanent disability.”
The most crucial aspect of this addendum is that the Raiders could terminate their agreement with Garoppolo for any reason related to Addendum G. This measure permits the Raiders to cut the quarterback if his foot injury continues to trouble him, and he cannot take a snap for the team. Nonetheless, if Garoppolo passes a physical, plays in at least one regular-season game and does not suffer any foot injury, Addendum G becomes null and void.
Protective Measure in Garoppolo’s Contract
In view of Addendum G, Garoppolo initially had an $11.25 million signing bonus and a base salary of $11.25 million for 2023 in his original deal. However, the Raiders removed the signing bonus and moved it to his base salary due to his foot injury. Garoppolo’s base salary now stands at $22.5 million in 2023.
The move to adjust Garoppolo’s salary is an essential strategic move made by the Raiders. It eliminates the need for the team to shell out money upfront until he takes a physical test. This strategy also ensures that the Raiders can drop him anytime they desire if his foot injury continues to trouble him.
Possible Outcome of Garoppolo’s Contract
The situation would indeed be unprecedented if Garoppolo is cut by the Raiders due to his foot injury at this stage of the offseason. Currently, the Raiders have other quarterbacks on their roster, such as Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Connell, and Chase Garbers. However, Garoppolo’s situation should not be taken to mean that he cannot perform his duties as a quarterback.
Editorial
As of now, it remains unclear how Garoppolo will perform in the upcoming season. The Raiders‘ decision to move on from Carr and opt for Garoppolo in free agency was met with mixed reactions. However, the quarterback’s foot injury condition should not affect his capabilities on the field. The Raiders should prioritize providing Garoppolo with sufficient support, both financially and medically, to help him overcome his injury and excel on the field.
Advice
As a quarterback, Garoppolo is undoubtedly an essential player for the Raiders. The team should ensure that they put measures in place to help him recover from his foot injury. These measures could include working with a team of well-experienced medical staff specialized in foot injuries, providing him with necessary medical equipment to help him recover, and ensuring that he has the necessary support from his teammates. With the right support and medical care, Garoppolo will be ready to do what he does best – playing excellent football for the Raiders.
