Rumors of a ‘Global Day of Jihad’ Have Unleashed a Dangerous Wave of Disinformation

October 13, 2023 | By

The rapid spread of violent videos and photos, combined with a toxic stew of mis- and disinformation, now threatens to spill over into real-world violence. In recent days, rumors of a so-called “global day of jihad” have been circulating, causing alarm and prompting right-wing figures in the United States to make violent threats against Muslims.

The Origins of the Rumors

It all began with a statement made by Khaled Meshaal, the former leader of Hamas, in which he called for protests across the Arab and Islamic worlds in support of the Palestinians. However, these comments were quickly mistranslated online, leading to the formation of the rumor that Meshaal was calling for a “global day of jihad.”

Within the toxic landscape of misinformation and disinformation that has spread online in the aftermath of Hamas’ attack on Israel, these misinterpreted comments have been weaponized by right-wing lawmakers and influencers. They have falsely suggested that Hamas is planning attacks on non-Muslims, further stoking fear and hatred.

The Danger of Online Disinformation

The rapid dissemination of this disinformation now poses a significant threat, as users of pro-Trump message boards and extremist channels on platforms like Telegram have made explicit threats of violence against Muslims. Some have claimed they will carry firearms and are prepared to use them if they encounter Muslims. This is a deeply troubling development that reinforces existing Islamophobia and highlights the urgent need for platforms to take responsibility for preventing violent extremism.

The Real-World Impact

The consequences of this disinformation campaign are already being felt. Some police authorities in US cities, including New York and Los Angeles, have announced increased officer numbers to counter potential violence. Schools in the US and the UK have closed due to concerns about “an international day of rage” or “out of an abundance of caution.”

In addition to the threats and fear generated online, two separate incidents of violence have occurred in China and France. In Beijing, a diplomat was stabbed outside the Israeli embassy, while in Arras, France, a teacher was stabbed to death by someone who shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. Videos allegedly showing these incidents are circulating online and are being shared by right-wing figures as supposed proof of the “global day of jihad.”

The Responsibility of Platforms

As this dangerous trend continues to escalate, the role of social media platforms in combating the spread of disinformation and preventing violence becomes increasingly crucial. While Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have shown limited evidence of threats against Muslims, more needs to be done to proactively remove and monitor harmful content.

Furthermore, the response from X, formerly known as Twitter, has raised concerns. Limited search results for terms related to the “global day of jihad” and a lack of response to inquiries about violent threats on the platform send a worrying message. These platforms must take the necessary steps to protect their users from harmful and dangerous content, while also ensuring transparency and accountability.

The Need for Vigilance and Unity

In the face of these rising threats, FBI director Christopher Wray has assured the Jewish community in the US that the agency is taking these threats seriously. However, it is vital that all communities stand together against hatred, violence, and extremism. Casting blame and perpetuating divisions will only exacerbate the situation.

It is imperative that society as a whole remains vigilant, rejects false narratives propagated by extremists, and fosters understanding and empathy. The responsibility falls not only on law enforcement and social media platforms but also on individuals to critically assess the information they consume and to actively promote dialogue and unity.

In this era of rapid information exchange and rampant disinformation, it is crucial that we all exercise caution, integrity, and a commitment to the betterment of society. Only through collective action can we hope to combat the spread of dangerous narratives and ensure the safety and well-being of all.
