Aquaman, the beloved DC superhero, is making a triumphant return to the big screen after a five-year wait. Warner Bros. has released the highly anticipated first trailer for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” showcasing Jason Momoa reprising his role as the aquatic hero. The sequel follows Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, who now sits on the throne of Atlantis. He teams up with his half-brother Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, to take on the formidable pirate Black Manta, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The premise of the film revolves around Black Manta’s relentless pursuit for revenge, driven by the death of his father. Equipped with the power of the mythic Black Trident, Black Manta poses a greater challenge than ever before, unleashing an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman enlists the help of his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis. The unlikely alliance between the brothers becomes necessary to protect their kingdom, save Aquaman’s family, and ultimately prevent irreversible destruction.

The sequel boasts an impressive ensemble cast, with Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren all reprising their roles from the original film. Additionally, Randall Park returns as Dr. Stephen Shin after a cameo appearance in the first movie. Vincent Regan, Indya Moore, and Pilou Asbæk join the cast as well. James Wan, the director behind the success of the first installment, returns to helm the sequel, while David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick pens the script.

Interestingly, the film has garnered attention due to Amber Heard’s involvement. Last year, Heard and her ex-husband Johnny Depp engaged in a highly publicized defamation trial, during which Heard claimed that her role in “Aquaman” was reduced by the studio following the fallout from her divorce. Heard faced significant online harassment as a result. However, director James Wan clarified that the focus of the sequel had always centered around the relationship between Arthur and Orm. He described the film as a “bromance action-adventure movie” that would delve into their dynamic.

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” marks the fourth DC movie to be released this year, following a series of lackluster launches for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash,” and “Blue Beetle.” The future of the DC Universe remains uncertain, as new co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are in the process of rebooting the franchise. No official announcement has been made regarding the involvement of Aquaman or Jason Momoa in the upcoming slate of DC films.

The highly-anticipated sequel is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2023, just in time for the holiday season. Fans and movie enthusiasts can now watch the thrilling trailer below.
