The Rugby World Cup, now in its 10th edition, is set to take place in France from September 8th to October 28th, 2023. With 48 games scheduled to be played in nine stadiums across the country, the tournament promises to be a momentous celebration of sports and fraternity. Fans and players from around the world are eagerly anticipating this event, which is expected to draw a record number of 600,000 international supporters.
The opening game of the Rugby World Cup will be held at the iconic Stade de France, located in the Plaine Saint-Denis near the suburbs of Paris. This choice of venue is particularly significant as it marks the 200 years since the inception of rugby. The match will see France take on New Zealand in front of 80,000 fans who have come from all corners of the globe to support their respective teams. In total, the Stade de France will host 10 games, including the opening match, two quarter-finals, two semi-finals, and the grand finale.
However, the Rugby World Cup is not just confined to Paris. France, known for its love of great competitions and rugby, has chosen eight additional cities to host various games. These cities – Toulouse, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, Saint-Etienne, Lyon, Lille, and Nice – will all play their part in this historic event. Toulouse, in particular, is regarded as the stronghold of rugby in France, as it is the birthplace of French rugby. Marseille, traditionally associated with football, will also feature prominently by hosting six games at the iconic Vélodrome stadium. The stadiums in Bordeaux, Nantes, Saint-Etienne, and Nice will each host four games, while Lyon and Lille will both have five games, vying to become the new promised land of rugby.
Beyond the sport itself, the French organizers of the Rugby World Cup have expressed a commitment to set new standards in terms of social and environmental responsibility, inclusion, and heritage. The French Ministry of Sports has outlined four target actions to achieve this vision: adopting a circular and sustainable economy, investing in education, training, and employment, protecting the environment, and promoting inclusion and sharing. To fulfill these objectives, the tournament organizers have signed the charter for responsible and sustainable sporting events, which includes 15 projects aimed at promoting eco-friendly practices. Additionally, the World Cup social charter has been signed to ensure the social exemplarity of the host organizer. A We Are Rugby promotional campaign has also been launched to emphasize the inclusive and respectful nature of the tournament.
In terms of viewership, rugby enthusiasts in France will have the option to watch the World Cup live and free-to-air on three TV channels: TF1, France Télévisions, and M6. TF1, in particular, has a longstanding partnership with World Rugby and will broadcast the competition’s marquee matches. Spectators in Paris will have the opportunity to gather at the Place de la Concorde, where giant screens will be set up, and match-concerts will be held at the Philharmonie. A Rugby Village will also be open to the public on the Place de la Concorde, offering a unique space for fans to come together and enjoy the tournament. In addition to Paris, other host cities will also set up Rugby Villages, serving as meeting and celebration areas that will play an essential role in the organization of the World Cup.
As the Rugby World Cup approaches, the stage is set for an extraordinary sporting event that not only showcases the best of rugby but also embodies the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and fraternity. It presents an opportunity for fans, players, and spectators from diverse cultures to come together and celebrate a shared passion for the game. With a focus on social and environmental responsibility, the tournament also strives to leave a positive legacy and set new standards for future sporting events. The Rugby World Cup 2023 promises to be a truly memorable and inspiring experience for all involved.
