Episcopal Church leader Michael Curry to have surgery after second hospitalization
The health struggles of Michael Curry
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, who gained worldwide attention with his passionate sermon at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, is set to undergo surgery this month. This comes after Curry has been hospitalized twice this year due to internal bleeding. The surgery, scheduled for September 8, will involve the removal of his right adrenal gland and an attached mass. The recovery period is expected to last between two and three weeks.
Curry’s health issues first became public in 2015 when he was briefly hospitalized for internal bleeding over Memorial Day weekend. Since then, he has had to reduce his work and travel schedule. In May of this year, it was revealed that he was also receiving treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib), a heart condition that causes irregular heartbeat. While in the hospital, Curry experienced two episodes of irregular heartbeat, prompting the need for further treatment.
The power of prayer and medical care
Curry has expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he has received during his health struggles. In an August 21 statement, he stated, “I am so grateful for your prayers. I expect that the work of the medical team will lead to healing that will make a difference. Fervent prayer plus good medical care is a powerful combination. In all things, God is good.” His faith and optimism are evident in his words, as he recognizes the importance of both spiritual support and medical intervention in his journey towards recovery.
African American leadership in the Episcopal Church
Curry’s role as the first African American to serve as the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church holds great significance. When he was consecrated in 2015, he proclaimed, “God is not finished with The Episcopal Church. What God has done in the past, God can do again.” These words echo a sentiment of hope and resilience, highlighting the potential for transformation and progress within the church.
Curry’s leadership has been characterized by a desire to initiate a movement rather than simply uphold an institution. His energy and commitment have resonated with many, and his participation in the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018 brought his message to an even wider audience. It could be argued that his sermon on that occasion was one of the most-watched sermons in Christian history.
Looking ahead
As Curry’s nine-year term as presiding bishop nears its end, thoughts turn to his successor. The 81st Episcopal Church General Convention is scheduled to elect the next presiding bishop in the summer of 2024. While Curry’s health issues may have impacted his ability to fully carry out his duties in recent years, his spirit and vision have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the Episcopal Church and beyond.
Prayers and support for Bishop Curry
As Bishop Curry undergoes surgery and enters a period of recovery, it is crucial to continue offering prayers and support for him, his family, and his medical team. The power of prayer, combined with effective medical care, can provide solace and strength during challenging times. Let us hope that Curry’s surgery is successful and that he experiences a full and speedy recovery. May his leadership and inspiring message continue to shape the Episcopal Church and inspire others in their own journeys of faith and service.
