UConn Football vs. NC State Wolfpack: How to Watch, By the Numbers, What to Watch For
Meeting Expectations
When was the last time expectations were riding this high for the UConn Huskies football team? In 2017, fans were hopeful for a successful second era under Randy Edsall, only to be disappointed by a lackluster performance. This time, however, there are good reasons to believe that the team will be better, including a new quarterback with familiarity with the offensive coordinator, the addition of talented transfer receivers, and greater depth and experience on the defense.
While it will be challenging for UConn to win six or more games due to a tough schedule, the presence of the transfer portal allows coaches to capitalize on a successful first year, as Jim Mora has done. This gives the Huskies an upside that is hard to predict going into this season.
Strength on Strength
One of the key matchups to watch in the UConn vs. NC State game is the battle between UConn‘s offensive line and NC State’s defensive line. NC State’s defensive line is exceptionally strong, posing a challenge for UConn‘s offensive line. If UConn can establish a solid run game and set up an improved passing game, it could be a positive sign for future games against teams like Georgia State and FIU.
New Look Offense
This season, UConn has a new starting quarterback, as well as an influx of talent at receiver and running back positions. Last year, injuries hampered the offensive strategy and limited familiarity with the system. However, with the return of key players from injuries and the addition of new talent, there is hope for a stronger UConn offense this year. The decision to go with Joe Fagnano at quarterback adds more familiarity to the offensive mix, potentially allowing for the re-creation of the success Fagnano had at Maine.
Will UConn Hang On?
Despite losing to NC State 45-10 last year, UConn is showing signs of improvement and has earned respect with a 15- or 14-point spread. NC State, ranked last year, is now unranked and has undergone changes in coaching staff and lost key starters. UConn‘s home advantage and the anticipation surrounding the team could work in their favor. The worst thing the team can do is get blown out and deflate the energy within the fanbase. Competing and offering hope for the future, even in a loss, would be a positive outcome for the Huskies.
Recipe for the Upset
For UConn to pull off an upset or at least hang around longer than expected, their defense will need to make game-changing plays to end NC State drives and give the offense a higher chance of scoring. Another possibility is that quarantine is the next great Husky quarterback and leads the offense to success with a breakout performance. In college football, anything is possible, and teams and players can change significantly from year to year.
Overall, the UConn vs. NC State game will be a significant test for the Huskies, revealing where they stand this season. The outcome and performance will set the tone for future games and determine if UConn can meet or exceed expectations.
