Mason Greenwood to Leave Manchester United
The Conclusion of the Internal Investigation
Manchester United has announced that Mason Greenwood, the 21-year-old striker, will be leaving the club following the conclusion of an internal investigation into the allegations made against him. In October 2022, charges of attempted rape and assault against Greenwood were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS cited the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material as reasons for the lack of prospects for conviction. Greenwood had denied all the charges against him, and Manchester United decided to conduct their own investigation.
After six months of investigation and under growing pressure from society, Manchester United has made the decision to move Greenwood on. In a statement, the club acknowledged the difficulties of him recommencing his career at Old Trafford and expressed a mutual agreement that it would be most appropriate for him to do so elsewhere. This decision comes after Manchester United fans staged protests following reports that the club was open to Greenwood returning.
Greenwood’s Response and Admittance of Mistakes
In a statement given to PA News, Greenwood thanked Manchester United and his family for their support while admitting to making “mistakes.” He acknowledged that people would judge him based on social media posts and said that he was brought up to know that violence in relationships is wrong. Greenwood maintained his innocence regarding the charges dropped in February but accepted responsibility for the situations that led to the social media post.
