The Backstory

The accusations against Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, stemmed from false claims made by Trump and his campaign after the November 2020 vote. They were falsely accused of illegally counting phony mail-in ballots after allegedly pulling them from mysterious suitcases at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Election Day. County and state officials quickly confirmed that the “suitcases” were standard ballot containers, and the votes were properly counted, refuting the fraud claims.

Trevian Kutti

According to Reuters, Trevian Kutti, a publicist, traveled to Georgia days before the January 6, 2021, riot and appeared at Freeman’s door uninvited. Kutti claimed to have been sent by a “high-profile individual,” whose identity she did not disclose, to deliver a message to Freeman. She told Freeman that she was in unspecified danger “due to the election” and had only 48 hours to “get ahead of the issue” before unknown people would show up at her home.

Kutti, in an Instagram post after the Reuters article was published, denied pressuring Freeman to falsely admit fraud. She had publicly identified herself as a member of “the Young Black Leadership Council under President Donald Trump” and claimed to work for Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and have clients such as the Queen of Jordan. However, a spokesperson for the queen denied any involvement with Kutti, and a representative for Ye stated that Kutti was not associated with the rapper when she met Freeman.

Harrison Floyd

Reuters reported that Harrison Floyd, a Trump campaign aide and executive director of a group called Black Voices for Trump, admitted to recruiting Kutti to meet with Freeman. Floyd stated that he participated in a meeting Kutti held with Freeman at a police station in Cobb County, Georgia. Floyd claimed that he was asked to set up the meeting by a man he described as a chaplain with connections to federal law enforcement. He declined to disclose the clergyman’s identity or provide further details about his connections. Floyd explained that the chaplain, who is white, wanted him, as a Black person, to approach Freeman to discuss an immunity deal, believing that she would be more likely to trust someone of her own race. Both Floyd and Kutti are Black.

Stephen Lee

Stephen Lee, an Illinois-based former police officer, was identified by Reuters in September 2022 as the person who sought Harrison Floyd’s help in contacting Freeman. Reuters based this identification on police bodycam footage and other reporting. Lee had previously visited Freeman’s house himself in December 2020, but he was turned away by the frightened election worker. When contacted at his home in Montgomery, Illinois, Lee refused to discuss why he had visited Freeman or whether someone had sent him. He had previously worked as a police officer in California and later served as a chaplain offering comfort to officers and others following the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York.

The relentless harassment of Freeman and Moss completely disrupted their lives, leading to numerous death threats and forcing Freeman to flee her home. The extent of their ordeal was described in dramatic testimony before the U.S. House’s Jan. 6 committee.
