Canha brings versatility, offense to Crew‘s outfield
Pitching and Defense vs Offense
Pitching and defense have been the strengths of the Milwaukee Brewers this season as they have relied on their strong pitching staff and solid defensive play to win games. However, their recent loss to the Washington Nationals showed the need for more offensive firepower. Brewers manager Craig Counsell acknowledged that the team had put too much pressure on the pitchers to be perfect, and on nights when they are not, it hurts the team. In order to address this issue, the Brewers made a move to acquire Mets outfielder Mark Canha just before the trade deadline.
The Trade Details
In the trade, the Brewers received Mark Canha and cash from the Mets, in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Jarvis. Canha, a nine-year veteran, brings a right-handed bat and a knack for getting on base. He is expected to be in uniform for Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals. Canha is due about $3.5 million for the remainder of this season, but the Mets are sending cash to cover all but a prorated portion of the league minimum. The Brewers will also be responsible for Canha‘s $11.5 million club option for 2024, with a $2 million buyout.
The Offensive Boost
While the Brewers have already added switch-hitting first baseman Carlos Santana for his defensive and power abilities, Canha adds another offensive threat to the lineup. Canha has a career batting average of .245 with a .343 on-base percentage and a .381 slugging percentage. Although his numbers this season have been slightly down, one factor to consider is his .279 batting average on balls in play, indicating some bad luck. Canha has been a productive player throughout his career, with a 127 wRC+ from 2018-2022, meaning he was 27 percent above league average offensively during that time. His experience in four postseasons also adds value to the Brewers.
Versatility and Roles
Canha has played all three outfield positions, as well as first base and some third base in his career. For the Brewers, he is expected to primarily play right field, with Sal Frelick shifting to center field. Manager Craig Counsell mentioned that the team will need to mix and match with the outfielders depending on the situation. The presence of the designated hitter position also allows flexibility in utilizing both Christian Yelich and Canha in the lineup. Despite Canha‘s offensive contributions, Counsell still sees a role for Joey Wiemer, who has impressed defensively but struggled at the plate.
The Prospect and Deadline Outlook
In exchange for Canha, the Brewers gave up Justin Jarvis, their 30th ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline’s list. Jarvis has had a mixed season with a 4.33 ERA in 17 starts across Double-A and Triple-A. The Brewers have been actively working the phones as the trade deadline approaches, looking to improve their offense, which currently ranks 24th in the league in runs per game at 4.16. General Manager Matt Arnold indicated that there could be more activity as the market loosens up, and the Brewers are determined to make moves to bolster their team.
Conclusion
The acquisition of Mark Canha brings versatility and offensive firepower to the Milwaukee Brewers. While pitching and defense have been the strengths of the team, the recent loss to the Nationals highlighted the need for more run production. Canha‘s track record as an offensive contributor, combined with his postseason experience, make him a valuable addition to the Brewers’ lineup. With additional moves possible before the trade deadline, the Brewers are actively looking to further improve their offense and make a push for the playoffs.
