Actress and Singer Jane Birkin, Inspiration Behind the Birkin Bag, Passes Away at 76

Remembering Jane Birkin

On July 16, 2023, the world bid farewell to British-born actress and singer Jane Birkin, a beloved figure in France and a timeless Francophone icon. Birkin, who had been living in Paris since the late 1960s, was known for her charismatic personality, her warm nature, and her unwavering advocacy for women’s and LGBT rights. She passed away at the age of 76 at her home in Paris, leaving behind a legacy that will undoubtedly live on.

A Talented Actress and Singer

Jane Birkin’s career spanned both the stage and the screen. She first gained attention in the controversial 1966 Michelangelo Antonioni film “Blow-Up,” where she appeared naked in a threesome sex scene, causing quite a stir at the time. It was in France, however, that Birkin truly became a star. Her love affair with the tormented French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, as well as her tomboyish style and endearing British accent when speaking French, endeared her to the French public. Birkin’s talent and charm shone through in her music and acting, making her a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.

An Iconic Love Affair and Musical Collaboration

It was on the set of the film “Slogan” in 1969 that Birkin first met Gainsbourg, and their love affair quickly captivated the nation. That same year, they released the sexually explicit song “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” (“I Love You… Me Neither”), originally written for Brigitte Bardot. The song, with Gainsbourg’s explicit lyrics punctuated by Birkin’s breathy moans and cries, caused a sensation. It was banned by the BBC and condemned by the Vatican. Though Gainsbourg’s drinking ultimately led to the end of their relationship in 1981, Birkin remained close to him until his death in 1991.

The Birkin Bag: Fashion’s Timeless Icon

Not only did Birkin leave an indelible mark on the world of music and film, but she also inspired one of the most legendary fashion accessories of all time: the Birkin bag. The bag, created by French luxury house Hermes, was named after Birkin when its chief executive, Jean-Louis Dumas, saw her struggling with her straw bag on a flight to London. The iconic handbag, known for its craftsmanship and exclusivity, has become a symbol of timeless elegance and luxury. Birkin’s influence on fashion will forever be remembered.

A Lasting Legacy

Jane Birkin is survived by her two daughters, Charlotte and Lou Doillon, both of whom have followed in their mother’s footsteps as singers and actresses. She also had a daughter, Kate, who tragically passed away in 2013. Birkin’s impact on the entertainment industry and her unwavering fight for social issues will continue to resonate for generations to come.

An Unimaginable Loss

Upon hearing the news of Birkin’s passing, French singer Etienne Daho expressed the sentiment shared by many, saying, “It’s unimaginable to live in a world without you.” Birkin’s songs, her laughter, and her incomparable accent will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved her. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo aptly summed up the feelings of a nation, describing Birkin as the “most Parisian of the English,” and vowing that her memory will endure.
