Sen. Schumer Calls on FDA to Investigate PRIME Energy Drink
On Sunday, Senator Charles Schumer of New York called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate PRIME, an energy drink brand founded by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI. Schumer also urged the FDA to issue warnings to parents regarding the high caffeine content of the beverage. Despite the label on the bottles stating that the drink is “not recommended for children under 18,” PRIME has gained significant popularity among teens and pre-teens. Each 12-ounce can of PRIME contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to about half a dozen Coke cans or nearly two Red Bulls.
The Targeting of Children
Senator Schumer expressed concern about the marketing strategy employed by PRIME. He argued that the brand specifically targets children under the age of 18 through social media and advertisements. Schumer stated, “Kids see it on their phones as they scroll, and then they actually have a need for it.” The senator highlighted the fact that the product’s high caffeine content is even more alarming than that of Red Bull.

The over-consumption of caffeine can lead to various health issues, including insomnia, jitters, anxiousness, a fast heart rate, upset stomach, nausea, headache, and a feeling of unhappiness, as noted by the FDA. While the administration states that healthy adults can consume around 400 milligrams of caffeine per day without experiencing dangerous effects, no set limit exists for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics even states that there is “no proven safe dose of caffeine for children.” The group advises against children and teens consuming any energy drinks, recommending that children aged 12-18 should not consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine in a day.
School Bans and Opposition
Due to the concerns surrounding PRIME, some schools in the United States have already banned the product. In response to one such ban last year, KSI, one of the founders of PRIME, took to Twitter pledging to send a truckload of the energy drink to the banned school and others. However, PRIME has not yet responded to Senator Schumer’s remarks regarding the need for FDA investigation.
