The Denver Nuggets are now one victory away from their first NBA championship after defeating the Miami Heat 108-95 in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Denver’s Nikola Jokic continued his MVP-like dominance with 23 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks, while Aaron Gordon delivered a playoff career-high 27 points along with six rebounds and six assists. Game 5 is set to be played on Monday in Denver, where the Nuggets will have the chance to close out the series in front of their home fans.
Solid Overall Performance by the Nuggets
The Nuggets’ Game 4 victory was a solid, efficient all-around performance. They shot nearly 50% from the field and 50% from behind the arc. Also, the Nuggets starters outscored their Miami counterparts 83-59. The game did not require a triple-double from Jokic or a 30-point performance from Jamal Murray. Michael Porter Jr. scored 11 points, and reserve Bruce Brown had 21 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Denver’s overall talent was undoubtedly the key to their win.
Miami Heat’s Struggles
Miami couldn’t find their rhythm throughout the game, shooting just 32% from three. Max Strus and Gabe Vincent, who were a combined 1-for-10 from the field and 0-for-7 from the three-point line, contributed just two points from the starting guards. Jimmy Butler played well, recording 25 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and Bam Adebayo added 20 points and 11 rebounds. The duo had a combined 45 points, nearly half of the Heat’s point total in the game.
Denver’s Chance to Win the Title
The Nuggets now have the opportunity to win their first NBA championship, with history on their side; a team that takes a 3-1 series lead is 267-13 in the NBA playoffs. Teams are also 35-1 in the NBA Finals when up 3-1. The Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 overcame a 3-1 deficit to win the championship against the Golden State Warriors, and the Heat will look to repeat such an incredible feat during Game 5.
Looking Forward: Keys to Winning Game 5
For the Nuggets, maintaining their momentum and avoiding complacency will be critical. They will need to rely on the versatility of Jokic and Gordon, and hope that Murray continues to distribute the ball effectively. Defensively, they will need to focus on their three-point defense, which allowed Miami to make 17 three-pointers in Game 2.
On the other hand, Miami will need to step up their perimeter shooting and defend against Denver’s production from
