Movie Review: A New Lease on Life for The Transformers Franchise

With the release of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” Paramount Pictures attempts to revitalize the exhausted franchise, and director Steven Caple Jr. succeeds in breathing new life into it. In this sci-fi action sequel to “Bumblebee,” Caple sets the story in the 1990s, acting as both a sequel to the previous movie in the franchise and a possible prequel to Michael Bay’s “Transformers” films. The story revolves around a battle between noble Autobots and wicked Terrorcons, which spills over to Earth and involves a subspecies of Transformers known as the Maximals.

The Story and Characters

The villain of the movie, Unicron, voices by Colman Domingo, aims to destroy the Maximals, robots that mimic the forms of animals from the Beast Wars toy line, to obtain the Transwarp Key, which allows the user to control the universe’s space and time. However, some Maximals escape to Earth, where they team up with the Autobots and two humans: Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), a former military electronics expert, and Elena Wallace (Dominque Fishback), a computer whiz artifact researcher at a museum. The Autobots are led by Optimus Prime, voiced by Peter Cullen, and Mirage (voiced by Pete Davidson). The character developments were engaging enough to keep the audience invested in the story.

The Technicalities

While the CGI of the film sometimes appears spotty, cinematographer Enrique Chediak’s detailed cinematography has successfully made all the action scenes decipherable compared to Bay’s films in the franchise. The pacing of the film is also solid, with no part dragging too much, despite a couple of expositions and action scenes. Caple and his deft direction surely ground the movie to the viewer’s experience, buying into the ridiculous shenanigans presented by the film.

Editorial and Advice

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” is an excellent summer movie, with good popcorn entertainment value. However, it’s not a perfect film, and there are better options in the theater at the moment, such as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and “The Little Mermaid.” Nevertheless, the film is a solid reboot to a franchise that had worn out its welcome years ago, owing to Michael Bay’s mishandling. The film is a hopeful step to revitalizing and giving the franchise a new start.

Conclusion

Overall, the latest “Transformers” movie shows how an exhausted franchise can still breathe new life with a fresh script, an excellent direction, and extensive character development. If the movie proves to be a success, Paramount could move forward with a new continuity, effectively ignoring Bay’s films, which I think is the best course of action. We hope that other studios will follow Paramount’s lead regarding addressing sequels or reboots of other exhausted franchises.
