Lexus Introduces New Bold Design for Off-Road Enthusiasts

Introduction

Lexus has been known for their luxury vehicles but now they are entering the off-road market with a bold design for the GX mid-size SUV. The 2024 model is set to hit the market with a rugged new look, emphasising its sophisticated four-wheel-drive system, tough construction, and Land Cruiser roots. A favourite among off-roaders and overlanding enthusiasts, Lexus is raising the bar with the GX550, offering an off-road-oriented Overtrail trim level, with 33-inch tyres and a locking rear differential.

Design and Features

The new design is blocky and squared-off, and noticeably larger compared to the previous models, with the same platform as the larger Lexus LX. Lexus claims that the new GX is significantly larger than the old one, with the same wheelbase as the LX, presenting the question of why they would still produce both models. The GX has a standard third-row seating that accommodates up to six or seven passengers, although the Overtrail comes in a two-row five-seater configuration, providing additional comfort, and practicality. The side-opening tailgate has been replaced with a conventional power liftgate with a glass section that opens separately, and the third-row features a power-folding function.

Lexus has maintained its signature quality interior in the new GX. The dashboard now sports modern features rather than the previous model that had been around for over a decade. The driver gets to enjoy a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with improved voice commands. The HVAC system can be controlled with two physical knobs and touch-sensitive buttons, and switches/buttons on the centre console near the shifter for the four-wheel-drive system, drive modes, and differential locks. The lineup starts with Premium and Premium+ grades, with the Luxury and Luxury+ expected to have more features available by trim.

Performance

Lexus is offering the GX550 model with a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine that can produce up to 349 horsepower and 479-pound-feet of torque. The same engine can be found in the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Sequoia, and Lexus LX600. It has a 10-speed automatic transmission that provides efficient power to all wheels, sports 4-wheel drives with a low-range, and a center locking differential. It has a combined fuel economy rating of 17mpg, higher than the old V-8 GX460’s 16 mpg combined. The suspension features the same setup as the LX, with an independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. Adaptive dampers are standard. The Overtrail adds a rear locking differential, 33-inch all-terrain tyres with 18-inch wheels, and skid plates.

Conclusion

The new GX mid-size SUV by Lexus is set to hit the market in 2024, presenting a new design and features for off-road enthusiasts. The design is larger and more rugged than the previous models and offers an off-road-oriented Overtrail trim level for those who demand more. It features a standard third-row seating, a power liftgate, and a modern interior with user-friendly features. The performance is based on a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine, providing efficient power to all wheels with the adaptive dampers and independent front suspension. The GX mid-size SUV will certainly attract the attention of off-road enthusiasts and will be expected to retail at a higher price compared to the previous models.
