Sky News host Sharri Markson has questioned why the Australian government paid millions of dollars in compensation to former political staffer Brittany Higgins, whose rape allegation was never proven. Ms Higgins received a multi-million dollar payout for her personal injury claim against the Commonwealth over her treatment after her alleged rape, following mediation talks in December that lasted just one day. The payout was settled without hearing from key witnesses, such as her employer at the time, Defence Minister Linda Reynolds. There are questions about the role of senior Labor figures in politicising the rape accusation, as well as concerns about the haste of the government in finalising the financial settlement. Senator Reynolds has said she will flag the settlement to the new federal anti-corruption commission, saying the speed of the process raises concerns about “fairness.”
