Iron Sheik, villainous Hall of Fame wrestler, passes away
The wrestling world has lost one of its most iconic figures on the morning of June 7, 2023. The Iron Sheik, whose legal name was Khosrow Vaziri, passed away at 81 years old at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia. The cause of his death is still unknown.
A Complex Legacy
The Iron Sheik drew on his Iranian heritage to create a caricature of a Middle Eastern villain during a time where foreign-style heels were a time-honored tradition in professional wrestling. He made quite an impact, becoming one of the most memorable villains in wrestling history. However, his legacy is not one-dimensional – he was also a talented wrestler and loyal American who was grateful for the opportunities the country had afforded him.
Infamy During the Height of the Iran Hostage Crisis
At the height of the Sheik’s infamy, he brought out the Iranian flag emblazoned with the face of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the then Iran’s Supreme Leader, to take on American wrestlers at the time of the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979. He often shouted “Iran No. 1! Russia No. 1!” into the microphone and strategically whipped the audience into a frenzy. The Sheik’s antics were so successful that his audience often became violent, sometimes to the degree that the wrestler himself feared for his safety.
Championships and Rivalry
In 1983, the Iron Sheik defeated Bob Backlund to win the World Wrestling Federation championship. He then went on to defend his title against Hulk Hogan on January 23, 1984, in front of a sold-out audience at Madison Square Garden. Although it seemed that the Sheik was going to win, Hogan managed to grab him and slam him into the pylon, then went onto to pin him. This moment marked the beginning of Hogan’s rise as the new star in World Wrestling Federation. Despite feeling bitter about the defeat, the Sheik continued his wrestling career and even became a manager for other wrestlers.
A Tragic Past and Struggling Through Life
The Iron Sheik had a complicated personal life that included a criminal record for drug possession and a losing battle with drug addiction. He also suffered a tragic loss when his daughter was murdered by her boyfriend, leading to thoughts of retaliation. However, his family talked him out of it, and the boyfriend received life imprisonment. Despite his complicated personal life, he continued to be grateful for the opportunities America had given him.
RIP Iron Sheik
The Iron Sheik’s legacy is marked by his unique wrestling persona and his complex personal history. However, he was a larger-than-life figure who left an indelible mark on the wrestling world. His death is a significant loss, not only to the world of wrestling but also to those who admired his perseverance through adversity.
