Fort, Tapit Trice, Angel of Empire Get Ready for Belmont Stakes
With the 2023 $1.5 million Belmont Stakes next weekend, the three thoroughbred horses, Fort, Tapit Trice, and Angel of Empire have had their final workouts. Forte, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby because of a foot injury, is said to have had a super good breeze with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. riding him. He ran five furlongs in 59.67 seconds. Tapit Trice went half-mile in 49.89 seconds and galloped out five-eighths in 1:02, and Angel of Empire posted the fastest work of the day, clocking in at 59.80 seconds.
Road to the Belmont Stakes
Forte won the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park this season after his Eclipse Award-earning season. He was unable to run in the Kentucky Derby because of a foot injury and missed the Preakness Stakes as well. To get back on the Belmont Stakes track, he passed a veterinary inspection last week.
Todd Pletcher, Hall of Fame trainer, said that Forte’s final workout was precisely what they had been hoping for. The horse looked like he was doing it well within himself, and he quickly cooled out once he was off the track. Now that he has passed his veterinary inspection before the Belmont Stakes, many people will be tuning in to see if he can emerge as a winner and achieve the Triple Crown.
Philosophical Implications of Horse Racing
Horse racing as a sport raises numerous philosophical issues, particularly related to the welfare of the animals involved. Critics argue that the “sport of kings” is a cruel and inhumane form of entertainment with many horses sustaining severe injuries or dying on the track. In contrast, supporters contend that horse racing is a time-honored tradition that provides significant economic benefits to the community, and it’s a sport that gives viewers a sense of thrill and excitement.
Regardless of one’s personal opinion on horse racing, the beauty of the horses cannot be denied. It’s clear that the horses involved in the Belmont Stakes have been provided immense care and attention to give them the best chance of winning under the supervision of knowledgeable and experienced trainers.
Editorial and Advice
The horse racing industry is in need of reforms to improve animal welfare and security, which would make the sport safer for jockeys and horses alike. However, as long as horse racing endures, it’s essential to appreciate the beauty and athleticism of these majestic animals.
Regarding the Belmont Stakes, spectators must watch the race with a critical eye. While they enjoy the thrill and excitement of the competition, they should also be mindful of the horses’ welfare and support organizations like the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority that are committed to promoting equine welfare.
Finally, horse racing enthusiasts should also remember that animals are not commodities. They should support efforts to find homes or retirement for racehorses when they retire and not abandon them to slaughterhouses once they are no longer productive..
