Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Team Up for ALS Fundraiser

A special walk/run event will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Razorback Stadium in Texarkana, Arkansas. Organized by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the event will honor the late educator Patricia Kenner, who died from ALS in Arkansas. The theme of the walk is “Stepping Closer to a Cure,” and all proceeds will support the Arkansas Chapter of the ALS Association in Rogers.

An Act of Community Service in Memory of an Educator

Patricia Kenner worked as an educator at the Texarkana Arkansas School District and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The walk is an act of community service in memory of her. Anthony Ware, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, praised Keener for her contributions to the community, stating that “she put her name to the plow to uplift our community.”

Bringing Awareness to a Devastating Disease

A debilitating disease, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, gradually affects the brain, taking away the patient’s ability to walk, eat, and eventually breathe. The disease currently has no cure, which is why it is essential to increase awareness and raise funds for research. Rea Allen, a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, stated that “in her last days, it was [Keener’s] wish we would educate others on that there is no cure for the disease currently, but there is hope.”

An Annual Fundraising Event

The organizers hope to make the walk an annual event dedicated to bringing awareness and raising funds for ALS research. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity continue to support the community through various initiatives promoting education and social justice.

Final Thoughts

The walk organized by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is an excellent example of community service done in the memory of a beloved educator. Increasing awareness about ALS is crucial, especially when there is no cure available. Funds raised by the walk will support the Arkansas Chapter of the ALS Association in Rogers, which is dedicated to advancing research and finding treatments. This event is an excellent example of how fraternities and sororities can work together to promote social justice and make a positive impact in their communities.
