D-backs Donate to Combat ALS on Lou Gehrig Day

The Arizona Diamondbacks made an impressive contribution to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on Lou Gehrig Day, committing $25,000 to Sarah Lang’s #FistBumps4ALS initiative, aimed at raising awareness for the crippling disease. The team’s decision to pitch in for the cause exemplifies the organization’s commitment to social responsibility, as well as their overall character and integrity.

Remembering the Legacy of Lou Gehrig

Lou Gehrig Day is celebrated every year on June 2nd to honor the former New York Yankees player’s contributions to the sport and to raise awareness for ALS, a disease also known as motor neuron disease that affects nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Gehrig’s legacy was remembered during the matches and events that took place all around Major League Baseball parks.

Sarah Langs’ Fundraiser for Project ALS Surpasses Expectations

Sarah Lang, a renowned MLB research expert, announced last year that she had been diagnosed with ALS and has since become a leading personality in raising funds and awareness for the disease. Her fundraiser, targeted at better understanding the brain disease, has raised over $60,000 as of Friday night, doubling the initial $30,000 goal. She expressed gratitude on social media for the D-backs donation. In partnership with the New York Mets and the Amazin’ Mets Foundation, she was honored at Citi Field on Friday.

MLB Efforts Against ALS

MLB broadcasters also displayed the Langs Star in their booth, which could be purchased online with proceeds going to Project ALS. Additionally, thirty autographed Lou Gehrig bats were auctioned, including the ones signed by current players – among them, the D-backs infielder Ketel Marte, ex-Arizona outfielder Daulton Varsho, and former Arizona State standout Spencer Torkelson, who now plays for the Detroit Tigers. The auction was due on June 12th.

Final Thoughts

The D-backs’ donation and the initiatives on Lou Gehrig Day remind us of the importance of charitable giving, both in support of scientific research and community engagement. We hope that more teams will follow the Arizona Diamondbacks’ example and contribute to our society’s well-being.
