“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” Crossovers and Cameos Explained
The Multiverse of Spider-Man
The second installment of the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” animated film series, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”, is finally playing in theaters. This movie introduces many characters, including Spider-People from different timelines and universes, creating an interconnected web of universes that includes previous live-action movies. The movie features a storyline where Miles Morales reunites with Gwen Stacy and meets the Spider Society, which consists of different Spider-People who protect the multiverse. Future Spider-Man Miguel O’Hara, Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman and many other spider-themed heroes make an appearance.
The Spider-People and Beyond
“Across the Spider-Verse” features many cameo appearances from various comic book heroes. It includes footage from “The Amazing Spider-Man,” where Andrew Garfield’s version witnesses the death of Capt. George Stacy. Tobey Maguire also appears as his version of Spider-Man from Sony’s original trilogy. Even Tom Hardy’s “Venom” universe is briefly shown, where the spot teleports himself into Mrs. Chen’s convenience store.
Connecting Live-Action and Animated Miles Morales
One of the most surprising cameos was by Donald Glover, who appeared as a live-action version of the Prowler in the Spider Society’s headquarters. This unexpected appearance is a nod to the fact that Glover played Aaron Davis, the Prowler’s alter-ego, in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which means that Miles Morales must exist in the live-action cinematic universe. It’s also a touching moment for Glover as he had campaigned years ago to play Spider-Man while starring in “Community.”
The Meta-Philosophy of “Canon Events”
As Miguel O’Hara explains the concept of “canon” events that occur in every Spider-Man’s timeline, the footage from different universes appears onscreen. It teaches the audience that every Spider-Person manages loss in their own way, allowing them to keep balance in the multiverse. It is an essential part of the movie, as the concept of losing loved ones, or dealing with what comes after loss, has been a significant theme in Spider-Man comics.
Conclusion
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is a movie that offers a multiverse of Spider-People. There are many cameos from other comic book heroes and references to previous movies and show iterations of Spider-Man. While the movie itself is an excellent addition to the animated Spider-Man franchise, it is the multiverse of Spider-People that is simply awe-inspiring. The possibilities that come with having every iteration of Spider-Man connected in one massive, multiverse web are endless.
