Shannon Sharpe to leave Fox’s ‘Undisputed‘ after 7 years with Skip Bayless
Shannon Sharpe’s seven-year run alongside Skip Bayless in the highly successful morning debate show in Fox Sports 1, “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” is coming to an end. According to the New York Post’s Ryan Glasspiegel, Sharpe reached a contract buyout agreement with Fox Sports and his final show is reportedly expected to be after the NBA Finals end in June. Sharpe, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, is reportedly taking his “Club Shay Shay” podcast with him from Fox Sports.
A successful, yet sometimes turbulent, partnership
Since Fox Sports poached Bayless from ESPN’s “First Take” in 2016 and paired him with Sharpe, previously an NFL commentator for CBS, the partnership became a successful one. Sharpe provided a different voice to counter Bayless, who had years of verbal sparring with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN2’s highly successful show. However, Sharpe and Bayless sometimes hit a bump in the road.
The New York Post reported that there was some public friction between Sharpe and Bayless in the fallout of the Damar Hamlin incident. Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game in January, and Sharpe was disturbed by the sight of a young man nearly dying on the field. Bayless jarring tweet, asking if the NFL could really postpone the rest of the Monday night game, given its timing and stakes in the playoff race, didn’t sit well with Sharpe. Sharpe missed the following day’s “Undisputed” episode and bickered with Bayless when he returned to the show.
What’s next for Sharpe?
It remains unclear where Sharpe goes from here, but he built a legacy with Fox Sports beyond the morning debate show. His time with Fox was often marked by headlines, including an ugly run-in with the father of Ja Morant and defamation lawsuit from Brett Favre stemming from his reaction to allegations of misuse of welfare funds. Sharpe’s fans would no doubt want him to take his wisdom and energy to the next venture.
Final thoughts
As one partnership comes to an end, we are reminded of the importance of healthy discussions and debates in today’s world. Sharpe and Bayless’ morning debate show inspired viewers to exchange opinions, have spirited discussions, challenge their worldview, and breed constructive conversations. While Sharpe’s departure may leave a void to be filled, viewers should continue engaging in these discussions to gain different perspectives and build upon their knowledge.
