AEW‘s Double or Nothing: Review and Analysis

On May 29, 2023, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) organized its annual pay-per-view event, Double or Nothing, in Las Vegas. Like the previous year, this year’s show was carried by its impressive main events. Despite some misses, the event provided an engaging experience for the audience. The event featured wrestling superstars such as MJF, Darby Allin, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, Sammy Guevara, and Kris Statlander, among others. Here is a detailed review and analysis of the event’s highlights and takeaways.

Four Stars

The highlight of Double or Nothing was undoubtedly the AEW world championship match featuring MJF, Darby Allin, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, and Sammy Guevara. The wrestlers showcased their skills and provided a fantastic performance, captivating the audience. The pace, high-risk moves, and storytelling made the event unforgettable. The match ended with MJF retaining his championship title by pinning Jack Perry. However, the post-match actions hinted at a possible arrival of new wrestlers from Kenny Omega’s past, making the future of AEW more exciting.

Anarchy Symphony

The Anarchy in the Arena match continued to deliver the expected level of entertainment. The match ended with Kenny Omega losing his match to the Blackpool Combat Club due to Don Callis’ distraction and the intervention of new wrestler Konosuke Takeshita, who attacked Kenny Omega, allowing Wheeler Yuta to strike him with the infamous screwdriver. The arrival of new wrestlers from the Forbidden Door will spice up AEW‘s upcoming events, and fans can only hope for better things from the wrestling federation.

Women’s Division Shakeup

The women’s division lacked highlight performances, but two changes promised titillating storylines. Toni Storm won the AEW women’s championship by defeating Jamie Hayter, who had been the reigning champion. The other highlight was Kris Statlander’s surprise return to send Jade Cargill’s TBS championship reign to an end. Cargill had been undefeated in the previous 60 matches, and Statlander’s sudden appearance to challenge the champion was thrilling.

Premium Pair

The ladder match between Wardlow and Christian Cage was a great spectacle. Arn Anderson, Wardlow’s partner, also played a considerable role in the match and emerged with a bloody face. Anderson’s performance made the observers feel that he and Wardlow would be a formidable duo in the future.

Cold Cuts

The undercard offered few choices for emotionally involved viewers. The House of Black versus the Acclaimed and Billy Gunn was a cold Trios championship match. In the match, Jeff Jarret hit Mark Briscoe with the guitar, and when he awoke and counted, FTR retained against Lethal and Jarrett. The other match that was expected to elicit strong emotions was Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole in an unsanctioned match. It had a slow start with Sabu and Roderick Strong having a chair shot-off, and then Sabu leaped off the top rope through the table on the outside, hurting his knee. The match didn’t turn out to be bloody, which made it feel unnecessary to have been designated as an “Unsanctioned” match.

Editorial and Advice

Double or Nothing provided an entertaining experience, but the undercard could have been more lively. The wrestling federation should make the storylines more captivating and involve fewer cold matches. Furthermore, the federation should invest in ensuring the welfare of its wrestlers. Injuries can take the wrestlers out of the scene for some time, leading to a waning of viewership.

Finally, the AEW crossed the $100 million revenue mark in 2022 and became a top player in the wrestling industry. However, the organization should avoid complacency and continue to invest in making the shows more exciting. A diverse pool of wrestlers from different backgrounds and regions could increase the appeal to a broader audience.
