On May 27, 2023, the world will witness WWE‘s Night of Champions event, streaming live from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Peacock. This event marks the first Night of Champions in eight years, with a new world heavyweight championship title up for grabs. The evening promises an exciting mix of classic rivalries and fresh matchups.
The Inaugural World Heavyweight Championship
One of the most significant events of the evening is the unveiling of a new world heavyweight championship, with the first champion due to be crowned at Night of Champions. Two Grand Slam and Triple Crown Champions, Seth Rollins and AJ Styles, will compete for the title. Rollins displayed dominant momentum defeating Damian Priest, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Finn Balor, while Styles defeated multiple Hall of Famers and former champion Bobby Lashley. Rollins may be the favorite, given his recent exceptional performance. However, in a highly skilled match, the championship could go either way.
SmackDown Women’s Championship
Rhea Ripley will defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship title against former champion Natalya. Ripley, a member of The Judgment Day, hopes to maintain her supremacy over the division. Still, she faces a challenging competitor in Natalya, who looks to become a two-time SmackDown Women’s Champion. The outcome depends on who can outsmart the other, which could be settled by the interference of Dominick Mysterio, member of The Judgment Day.
Cody Rhodes v. Brock Lesnar
Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar have a score to settle. Following his loss at WrestleMania to Roman Reigns, Rhodes found himself in a feud with Lesnar. Lesnar attacked Rhodes during a tag team match, and as revenge, Rhodes defeated Lesnar on Backlash. However, during his first-round match against Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura in the inaugural World Heavyweight Championship tournament, Rhodes was defeated thanks to interference from Lesnar. Lesnar’s brutality has grown over recent weeks, leaving Rhodes injured. Even so, Rhodes has previously proven that injury motivates him to come out on top.
WWE Raw Women’s Championship
Bianca Belair, WWE‘s current longest-reigning women’s champion, will defend her Raw Women’s Championship title against Asuka. Asuka is a Grand Slam and Triple Crown winner, boasts a highly successful wrestling career. As the underdog, Asuka might end Belair’s historic reign.
Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship
Owens and Zayn, the current Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions, will defend their titles against Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa. Owens and Zayn defeated the Usos to become champions at WrestleMania, putting an end to the Usos’ triumphant championship run. However, Owens and Zayn have had ongoing tensions with the Bloodline and Zayn’s affiliation, leading to a decision by Reigns that he and Sikoa will fight for championship gold. The result of this match impacts the future of the Bloodline and the relationship between Reigns and the Usos.
Becky Lynch v. Trish Stratus
Former WWE Hall of Famers Trish Stratus and Lita competed against Becky Lynch and Lita, losing the match and the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship title. After the match, Stratus attacked Lynch, inciting a feud. Stratus’s antics included weeks of taunting Lynch, who is considered one of the most successful women’s wrestlers. Stratus has been forced to realize the risk of taunting someone so talented. Determined to prove her worth, Stratus will need to be at the top of her game to defeat Lynch.
WWE Intercontinental Championship
Gunther has had a successful and dominant reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion for the past year. Mustapha Ali is the first to challenge him for the title, winning a battle Royal. Without signs of slowing down, Gunther has proven himself to be a fierce competitor with no intention of relinquishing his title. It remains to be seen whether Ali poses a legitimate threat to Gunther’s ongoing success.
Editorial
While Night of Champions is sure to showcase some incredible matchups and rivalries, the philosophical question worth discussing is whether and how wrestling will continue to break down boundaries. Specifically, is it ethical to hold such events in Saudi Arabia, given its troubling human rights record? This is a complicated issue, as the Saudi Arabian market is essential to WWE‘s global expansion and business strategy, but at what cost? The Saudi Arabian events have been a catalyst for controversy and hard questions, and these concerns should not be ignored.
Advice
In conclusion, WWE Night of Champions 2023 promises to be an unpredictable evening of thrilling action and stories, with the inaugural world heavyweight championship title match being a major highlight. Viewers can tune in to see their favorite wrestling stars compete for championship titles and enjoy the spectacle. However, it’s also important to acknowledge the ethical considerations surrounding holding events such as this in Saudi Arabia. Wrestling fans may enjoy the entertainment and drama, but we should not forget about the bigger picture.
