Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game Integral Edition is set to be released in May of 2024 for pre-order, with a price starting at $100. Zombicide publisher CMON has picked up the project after it was canceled by IDW Games more than two years ago. The game features designs from Emerson Matsuuchi, the creator of Specter Ops, and is cooperative, with one to four players working together in a game of stealth with an intricate narrative. The game can be played through a 14-mission campaign in the Shadow Moses arc or with six standalone missions in a VR mission book. The game features recognizable characters such as Solid Snake, Meryl, Gray Fox, and Otacon as playable heroes, as well as bosses Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven, and Liquid Snake. The pre-order version of the game comes with an exclusive Metal Gear REX figure and a 109-page graphic novel illustrated by Kenneth Loh, known for his work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe.

Philosophical Discussion

Metal Gear Solid has been a gaming franchise that has been around for quite some time. Its design is known for the technical feats it has accomplished and its unique characters that are just as compelling as they are unique. The release of the board game adaptation of the game series is an interesting step for the franchise and a change in direction. Amidst the ever-evolving ways we engage video games, perhaps this adaptation is a homage to the traditional analog gaming that we have come to love and miss.

Editorial

The idea of a board game adaptation of a video game is not new, but integrating Matsuuchi’s design for Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is a well-thought-of touch. The innovative design of the game is a great choice that brings together the video game and board game worlds seamlessly. CMON‘s decision to pick up the project and bring it to fruition after its cancellation by IDW Games shows the company’s commitment to making great, lore-rich board games. This adaptation is a great way to introduce the franchise to fans of tactical board games, while still satisfying all Metal Gear fans.

Advice

If you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise or curious about its lore and characters, the upcoming board game adaptation is worth a look. With CMON‘s experience in making well-crafted board games, the game is set to be high-quality and faithful to the franchise. While the price tag of $100 for the pre-order may be a high price for some, the exclusive REX figure and graphic novel are definite bonuses for fans. This adaptation is an excellent way to experience Metal Gear Solid’s gameplay in a new and unique way.
