Air Force Family Reflects on Meaning of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is an important day for Americans to remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. For one Air Force family in Colorado Springs, this day holds a particularly special meaning.
A Brave Tribute
In 2019, seven-year-old Collin Wong stood beside his father’s casket, singing “You Raise Me Up” in tribute to his father, Air Force Major Dom Wong, who passed away after a five-year battle with colon cancer. For his widow, Lynn Wong, the memory of that beautiful moment stands as a testament to her husband’s courage and loving spirit. “He made me a better person” she says, reflecting on his life and legacy.
A Difficult Journey
The Wong family‘s journey with cancer began in 2014, shortly after the birth of their second child, Juliana. Air Force Major Wong was diagnosed with colon cancer, and though he underwent treatment and seemed to have beaten the disease when doctors declared “no evidence of disease” the following year, it soon returned with a vengeance. The prognosis was grim: peritoneal carcinomatosis, cancer of the abdominal lining. By Thanksgiving Day of 2016, the family knew it was time to come home. Just two days later, Air Force Major Wong passed.
Through the Eyes of the Family
For Lynn and her family, the years since have been a time of both grief and growth. Collin has continued to sing, with the help of organizations like Angels of America’s Fallen, which has given him numerous opportunities to perform. Meanwhile, Juliana has flourished in her own way, investing her time in dance and finding her own path forward. Through it all, Lynn remembers her husband’s bravery and his commitment to fighting for his own life in the face of overwhelming odds.
The Meaning of Memorial Day
As Americans across the country prepare to observe Memorial Day, the Wong family‘s story offers a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that so many have made in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave their lives to defend our freedom, but it is also a time to reflect on the courage and resilience of those who are left behind. For the Wong family, this day is a chance to remember the love and bravery of Air Force Major Dom Wong, and to honor his legacy of service and sacrifice.
A Call to Action
As we commemorate Memorial Day, it is important to remember the families left behind by those who have given their lives in service to our nation. Organizations like Angels of America’s Fallen provide crucial support and resources to families like the Wongs, helping them to heal and rebuild in the aftermath of loss. If you are able, consider supporting these organizations and the important work they do.
