Foo Fighters Introduce New Drummer, Josh Freese
The Foo Fighters have finally ended months of speculation by revealing their new drummer during their “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts” livestream event on May 21st. In this intimate studio show, which previewed the band’s upcoming 11th studio album But Here We Are, the live debut of Josh Freese was a highlight for fans. Freese is known as a veteran studio and touring drummer and has played with many well-known acts, including Guns N’ Roses, A Perfect Circle, and Nine Inch Nails. This announcement was made after humorous cameos by Chad Smith, Tommy Lee and Danny Carey of Tool.
The Monumental Task Ahead
Josh Freese has the challenging responsibility of stepping into the formidable shoes of late Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away at the age of 50 from undisclosed causes in March 2022 while on tour in South America. Hawkins joined the band in 1997, taking over from the group’s first drummer, Sunny Day Real Estate’s William Goldsmith. Just as Dave Grohl’s drumming style was nearly impossible to challenge, Freese will have a monumental task ahead of him following the beloved, blissful beat machine Hawkins, whose smile, good cheer, and California cool have become an enduring part of the Foos live appeal.
Hawkins’ Legacy
The band’s livestream concert was their first full set since a pair of Hawkins tribute concerts held last fall in London and Los Angeles. These concerts featured a rotating group of drummers sitting in with the Foos, including Hawkins’ teenage son, Shane, Blink-182’s Travis Barker, tween viral sensation Nandi Bushell, The Darkness’ Rufus Taylor, Omar Hakim, Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk, Weezer drummer Pat Wilson, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, the Police’s Stewart Copeland, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith.
With this line-up, the group celebrated Hawkins’ legacy and paid tribute to him in the best way possible, with a range of drumming and musical talent all showing their appreciation. Prior to Sunday’s show, both Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron and The Darkness’ Taylor had publicly denied they were in the running for the Foos drum seat amid unconfirmed reports that Freese would be taking over.
The Future of Foo Fighters with Josh Freese
With the upcoming release of their new album in June, Foo Fighters have a busy summer planned with more than a dozen festival appearances lined up at various festivals all over the world. As for the future of the band with their new drummer, fans are eagerly waiting to see how they will adapt. Regardless, Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters have demonstrated that they can weather storms while staying true to their roots and continue to put on great rock performances.
Conclusion
The Foo Fighters have revealed their new drummer as Josh Freese. Freese is a veteran studio and touring drummer who has previously played with Guns N’ Roses, A Perfect Circle, and Nine Inch Nails. With his addition to the band, the Foo Fighters will take on many new challenges, as they try to adjust to the loss of their previous drummer, Taylor Hawkins. How the band adapts to the change will be of interest to fans worldwide. Regardless, the Foo Fighters have demonstrated their resilience in the past, and their upcoming tour will showcase their ability to put on great rock performances, which the band is well known for.
