Valencia beats Real Madrid as Vinicius Junior is sent off
Valencia emerged with a precious victory over Real Madrid on Sunday, moving them further away from the relegation zone in a game that was unfortunately marred by racist chanting and a red card for Vinicius Junior. Diego Lopez struck in the first half of the match to give Valencia the edge, and despite Real Madrid playing with 10 men after Vinicius was sent off following a scuffle with Valencia players, Valencia managed to hold on to their advantage till the final whistle.
A disappointing result for Real Madrid
Real Madrid had nothing to play for after getting eliminated from the Champions League, following a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday. The defeat to Valencia just compounded an unfortunate week for the club, who were hoping to at least end their domestic campaign on a high note.
Unacceptable racist chanting
The match was unfortunately marred by racist chanting aimed towards Vinicius Junior, which prompted the referee to pause the match for a few minutes in the second half. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said that he had told the referee that he should have stopped the match in light of the racist slurs. Ancelotti emphasized that the issue of racism needs to be addressed by LaLiga, stating that these episodes of racism have to be stopped, and the match has to end in cases when the stadium is insulting a player with racist chants.
Vinicius’s reaction, which got him a red card, was deemed understandable by the Real manager, who added that the player was “angry” and “very sad” as a result. Ancelotti clearly voiced his frustration with how the situation was handled, as he expressed concern and demanded change.
LaLiga must tackle the problem of racism
In light of this incident, it is time for LaLiga to take action to deal with the issue of racism. There have been many reported incidents of racism in matches, and it is essential that steps are taken to eradicate this problem. Players should feel safe and supported on the football pitch, and it is LaLiga’s responsibility to ensure that these fundamental principles of respect and sportsmanship are upheld.
Final thoughts
The result of the match takes a backseat amid these unfortunate events. It is concerning that in 2023, racism still stains the beautiful game of football. It is essential that every individual involved in the sport, from the fans to the league authorities, play their part in ending racism, allowing the game to remain a platform for promoting fairness, inclusion, and togetherness, without any negative impact on players, who are some of the most important ambassadors of the sport.
