Devin Haney Shoves Vasiliy Lomachenko During Weigh-In Ahead of Their Undisputed Lightweight Championship Fight
Devin Haney, the current undisputed lightweight champion, gave Vasiliy Lomachenko a hard shove during their weigh-in in Las Vegas, ahead of their Saturday 12-round match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Their fiery faceoff saw Lomachenko, a former three-division champion, fell into the arms of his Ukrainian entourage. Haney, who is from the San Francisco Bay Area and lives in Las Vegas, is 29-0 with 15 knockouts and holds all four championship belts. He rose to WBC champ in October 2019 after Lomachenko had his title removed, and became the undisputed champion after winning a one-sided unanimous decision over George Kambosos Jr. in June 2022 in Melbourne. The two fought in Australia that October, resulting in the same outcome.
The sudden flare-up during the weigh-in can be attributed, according to Haney, to “the emotions that set in now that it is finally time.” Yet, there have been tensions between the two boxers even before their Las Vegas match-up. Lomachenko, who had won two Olympic gold medals while boxing for Ukraine, had passed over Haney in 2019, despite the latter being viewed by many as the potentially best pound-for-pound boxer at that time.
The Irony of Lomachenko‘s Decision to Pass over Haney
Lomachenko could have fought George Kambosos Jr., whom Haney had beaten, and his manager, Egis Klimas, had badly wanted him to take that fight. However, Lomachenko refused, citing that he did not want to stand idly by while his country was under attack by Russia. According to Lomachenko, he couldn’t think about his career and his boxing plans while his country was suffering. Lomachenko stated, “All I can see right now is our country’s being bombed. People are getting killed. Everybody in this country needs me here.” It is commendable that Lomachenko is a man who puts his country before his boxing career. However, there is irony in the fact that Lomachenko declined to fight Kambosos, whom Haney had eventually beaten, only to be pushed by Haney himself during their weigh-in.
A Disappointing Display of Sportsmanship
Regardless of the reasons behind Haney‘s push, it is a disappointing display of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship should be emphasized in every athletic competition, especially in a sport such as boxing, which requires the highest degree of physical prowess and mental discipline. As spectators, we want to witness boxers who respect each other’s capabilities and exhibit self-control in any situation, including during weigh-ins. Such displays of aggression can lead to serious injury and risk the lives of boxers who train for months, even years, to compete. In essence, Haney‘s push was unnecessary and unbecoming of a champion.
Editorial and Advice on Sportsmanship
As sports fans, we should always encourage sportsmanship, which involves respecting one’s opponents, playing fair, and upholding the integrity of the game. It is important to remember that sports are not just about winning, but also about playing with honor and dignity. We should teach young athletes that sports are not only about individual achievement but also about teamwork and respecting rules and regulations. As for Haney, he should issue a public apology for his actions and demonstrate that he understands the importance of sportsmanship. If he wants to be a true champion in his sport, he must embody the best qualities of an athlete, on and off the ring.
