Massive Fire in SouthPark Area Affects Nearby Businesses and Health Care Site

A five-alarm fire that broke out in the SouthPark area on Thursday morning has caused nearby businesses to go on alert and some of them have closed early. The Tryon Medical Partners – Southpark in the 7700 block of Liberty Row Drive, located west of the fire, has closed for the day. Similarly, Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse SouthPark, situated a block west of the blaze on Piedmont Row Drive, was told to evacuate by the Charlotte city officials due to compromised air quality. The same fate awaited Leo’s Italian Social, located in Piedmont Town Center, which had planned to open but was also asked to evacuate.

Immediate Measures Taken to Ensure Safety

The situation got dire when the Piedmont Town Center property manager Lincoln Harris received an alert from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to evacuate all areas near Fairview Road, Park South, and Barclay Downs. The alert requested people to evacuate immediately and not delay the process. Other businesses in the same area, including Potbelly sandwich shop, Mal Pan Mexican, Tous Les Jours bakery, Peppervine, and Bentley’s, closed temporarily out of safety concerns.

Impact on Nearby Businesses

The impact wasn’t limited to closed health care sites and stores. Talent Bridge, a job recruitment and temporary staffing office, based at 6100 Fairview Road, also had to close early due to the ongoing fire situation. However, some of the area businesses like SouthPark mall and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill remained open. 131 Main Restaurant, located at 5970 Fairview Road, initially planned to remain open despite the surrounding chaos, along with Ruth’s Chris Steak House at 6000 Fairview Road, which was expected to open by the evening once the situation improved.

Editorial Viewpoint

It is quite a scary situation when a fire of this magnitude breaks out at a place that is predominantly a residential and commercial area. The response from the city officials and businesses requires appreciation, given the urgent and immediate measures taken to ensure the safety of the residents and employees working in the vicinity. The news of Tryon Medical Partners-Southpark closing for the day in the middle of a pandemic is particularly concerning, highlighting the challenges that health care providers face in striking a balance in service continuity while safeguarding patient health and safety.

Advice for the Residents and Businesses

The residents and businesses in the immediate vicinity of the fire must exercise the utmost caution and comply with the instructions given by Charlotte officials until the authorities give an all-clear signal. Similarly, the employees and staff of local businesses must follow their safety protocols while dealing with such situations and have an emergency plan in place always. Lastly, these unfortunate events call for businesses to invest in insurances that would help in protecting their assets and ensure that the operations can continue smoothly during trying times.
