Canada Wildfires Affect Southeast Wisconsin
Out-of-control wildfires in the Western regions of Canada have now begun to affect the skies in southeast Wisconsin. Smoke particles travelling from Alberta and Saskatchewan have caused grey skies and reddish sunrises and sunsets in the area. These fires have already scorched 478,000 hectares (1,800 square miles) of land in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan as of May 16, an area 10 times the average area burnt for this time of year.
The Smoke Particles and High-Altitude Air Quality
While the smoke is well above the atmosphere and has not yet affected the air quality, with hazy skies, the situation is bound to cause concern, particularly for individuals experiencing breathing-related medical conditions such as COPD, asthma, emphysema and other allergies, as it could lead to red or purple air quality ratings which is hazardous. According to Lindsey Slater, a meteorologist, this smoke, which is present in the upper levels of the atmosphere, is riding the jet stream and is about 35,000 feet above the surface of the earth where average commercial flights pass by.
The Impact of Worsening of Air Quality
This situation is alarming and requires immediate attention. While there have been reports of the smoke intensifying and turning into hazardous Air Quality ratings for areas in South Dakota and Western Minnesota, southeast Wisconsin has yet to be affected at such a magnitude. However, whether the air quality drops in Wisconsin or not, the cause for concern should not be ignored. Each breather should take proper precautions to ensure their protection such as wearing a mask and avoiding outdoor activities in such troubled times.
Long-Term Consequences of Wildfires
These wildfires have become a pattern that seems to be repeating itself, and despite wildfire being a result of natural or human factors, the impact on the climatic patterns is becoming evident. The quality of the atmosphere and the production of clean and fresh air to breathe is a non-negotiable aspect of our lives, and ignoring this pattern could have long-lasting effects on our environment and the overall health of the earth. The increasing number of wildfires in recent years suggests a need for both urgent reassessment and significant changes in forest management policies and effective responses that curtail fires, that could have a major impact on countries and communities.
Conclusion
It is essential that we all take the matter of our air quality and climate seriously. Every individual at their capacity can contribute to the improvement of the environment and their health by taking steps that reduce carbon footprint. It is vital for policymakers to develop and implement stricter regulations and policies that reduce the increase of wildfire incidents. The people must also cooperate and support their governments in executing these measures to prevent hazardous situations that impact the environment and society.
