Fighting Game ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ Introduces New Kameo Fighter System
On September 19, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games will release the reboot of the beloved fighting game franchise: Mortal Kombat 1. After weeks of anticipation and teasers from co-founder Ed Boon, the game details have been revealed such as the addition of a Kameo Fighter System.
The Kameo Fighter System
In a press release, Warner Bros. Games announced that the Kameo Fighter System will be utilized in the new Mortal Kombat 1 game. The system will include a unique roster of partner characters that assist players in matches. As explained in the press release, Kameo Fighters are supporting characters that can be called upon to aid players during fights. While further details are scarce, it is speculated that this system could function similarly to a Marvel Vs. Capcom-style of gameplay where NPC allies can be called in for backup. Co-founder Ed Boon has confirmed that more details will be revealed soon, though the Premium and Kollector’s Edition versions of the game will offer five new Kameo Fighters post-launch.
Legacy Characters & Guest Characters
It’s typical of most fighting games to have fans actively speculating which legacy characters will make a comeback for the new installment. In addition to the fan favorite characters, new leaks suggest that guest characters Homelander, Conan the Barbarian, and DC’s Peacemaker may join the roster. While not yet confirmed, previous NetherRealm titles have seen guest characters make appearances. But a more pertinent question is: will the Kameo Fighter System introduce new characters to the franchise? Only time will tell.
New Gameplay Mechanics
As with past NetherRealm titles, Mortal Kombat 1 will introduce unique gameplay features. Mortal Kombat X had a variation system, which operated similarly to character loadouts, while Injustice 2 featured custom gear pieces that modified character stats in different ways. Mortal Kombat 11 expanded upon that gear system by allowing player customization. Mortal Kombat 1 will feature its unique gameplay mechanics, including the Kameo Fighter System. How this system will function in gameplay remains to be seen, but there’s a clear effort to evolve the game’s mechanics to keep things fresh.
Editorial & Advice
The introduction of the Kameo Fighter System in Mortal Kombat 1 and the inclusion of new guest characters is a sign of how important developers see intertextual collaboration. The use of guest characters, especially in character-driven gaming like Mortal Kombat, shows the potential of great storytelling when a diverse range of characters are introduced. The strategy of using guest characters as a promotional tool for cross-media promotion has worked for many franchises, including Mortal Kombat. However, there needs to be a balance between new characters and legacy characters to not alienate loyal fans of the franchise.
For players eager to try out the new Kameo Fighter System, it would be wise to keep an eye out for official announcements from Warner Bros. Games. But players also need to prepare themselves by practicing with their favorite legacy characters in preparation for the release of Mortal Kombat 1. While the Kameo Fighter System and new guest characters may add a fresh element to the game, the game’s success will ultimately rely on the input and feedback of the players themselves.
