The former NFL quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, Matt Ryan, has joined CBS as an analyst for the upcoming season. Ryan, a four-time Pro Bowler and the 2016 NFL MVP, was recently released from the Indianapolis Colts after a disappointing season. CBS announced that Ryan will serve as a studio and game analyst across multiple platforms for the upcoming season. Ryan has expressed his excitement on Twitter, saying he is “Looking forward to breaking down the game this season”. Despite joining CBS, Ryan has made it clear that this is not a retirement announcement.
Ryan is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history and spent nearly all of his 15-year career with the Falcons. He guided Atlanta to six playoff appearances, three division titles, and an MVP award in 2016. However, his career trajectory started to decline after a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots in 2016 when they held a 28-3 lead. The Falcons never seemed to recover from that disappointment and went 25-40 over his final four seasons in Atlanta.
With the Falcons in rebuilding mode and needing to shed a huge amount of money under the cap, Ryan was dealt to the Colts for a third-round draft pick. The Colts had hoped he would be the quarterback who could lead the team to the Super Bowl, but he was benched by coach Frank Reich, regained the starting job after Reich was fired, only to be benched against by interim coach Jeff Saturday after Indy squandered a 33-0 halftime lead in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He started 12 games for the Colts, completing 67% of his passes for 3,057 yards with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Indianapolis went 4-7-1 with Ryan as the starter, and finished 4-12-1.
Despite being released by the Colts, Ryan is still keeping his options open for playing again, making it clear that he is not retiring. He has decided to try broadcasting while waiting for other opportunities. Ryan’s announcement of joining CBS has been positively received, and he has been welcomed by CBS Sports executive producer and executive vice president, Howard Bryant, who said Ryan “will bring a fresh perspective to CBS Sports“.
In conclusion, Matt Ryan’s signing with CBS as a game and studio analyst for the upcoming NFL season is a sign of his exceptional playing career and his excellent communication skills. Ryan will bring a fresh perspective to CBS Sports as a seasoned professional with immense experience of playing in the NFL and his ability to provide insights from the quarterback’s point of view. It will be interesting to see his analysis and how he provides valuable insights to viewers.
