According to the internet, some of the most famous mothers are Mariah Carey, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Adele, the K-pop group Blackpink, and even Diana, Princess of Wales. Anyone can be a mother, irrespective of gender. It is a term that has evolved out of the necessity to recreate what actual mothering and family means after being ostracized from their biological factions by members of marginalized L.G.B.T.Q communities.
Although the term mother has a significant tie with the ballroom scene, it has found its way into broader culture, thanks to the show “Pose,” which debuted in 2018 and was set in the 1980s New York ballroom scene. A member of the House of Xtravaganza, Sydney Baloue, who is writing a book on the history of ballroom and voguing, said that when the black diva figures we admire, like Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, or Chaka Khan, are being referred to as mothers, not only have they nurtured us with their music and cultural contribution, but they have also fed us in a way.
The word has been used by fans, brands, and sometimes even by women themselves, without the article in front of it, as a way to express love and appreciation for famous women. However, this appropriation has led to concerns about cultural appropriation, particularly because many young L.G.B.T.Q. people, particularly those of colour, might not fully appreciate the term’s origin.
The corporate embrace of mother is almost inevitable, and according to Mr. Baloue, Black culture informs American culture, which ends up informing everything, including brand copy. However, Professor Marlon Bailey, who wrote a book chronicling ballroom culture in Detroit, is concerned about the cultural appropriation of the ballroom community without attending to the conditions out of which ballroom was created in the first place.
In conclusion, the use of the term mother has become a symbol of endearment for famous women, and it has become popularized on the internet in recent years. However, there are concerns about the appropriation of the ballroom community, and it is important to note the origin of the term and to always let the world know where the culture came from. It is essential to celebrate and respect the history and the values that the term ‘mother’ represents.
