The Legend of Zelda franchise has been around for over 30 years, and its latest installment, Tears of the Kingdom, is finally available on the Nintendo Switch. Tears of the Kingdom is the highly anticipated follow-up to Breath of the Wild, the game that reinvigorated the franchise and defined the Nintendo Switch. In this game, players once again take control of Link, who has a new arm granting him new powers, and is tasked with the same quest of rescuing Princess Zelda.

One of the major highlights of Tears of the Kingdom is its gameplay. The game introduces new abilities like Ultrahand, a device that can essentially super glue anything to anything, and the totally-not-a-Nintendo-Switch Purah Pad, which allows Link to stick things together to create all kinds of items, rewind time for a specific object, and teleport through matter directly above him. These new powers create infinite possibilities for how Link fights, flies, and puzzle-solves his way through Hyrule and the sky islands above it.

The game’s open-world design, where players have the freedom to explore and create, may seem daunting to some. However, Tears of the Kingdom provides structure to its open-world gameplay, ensuring that players don’t feel overwhelmed or lost. The game also allows players to solve whatever problems they encounter however they like, with whatever materials they can scrounge or carry with them. This freedom to experiment and think outside the box is what makes this game so satisfying to play.

Despite being a great game, Tears of the Kingdom is not without its flaws. It tries to replicate the same emotions and wonder of Breath of the Wild, but it falls short in this aspect. The game’s story follows the same beats as its predecessor, and Zelda is once again relegated to a minor role. Additionally, the repetitive story cutscenes and the need to constantly make new weapons in the middle of boss fights are some minor gripes with the game.

Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a must-play game for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. Its gameplay is fantastic, and its open-world design offers endless possibilities for exploration and creation. However, it may not be able to replicate the feeling of wonder that came with playing Breath of the Wild. Nevertheless, the game’s depth and engrossing gameplay may very well ruin lives, as it provides a satisfying and enjoyable experience that players won’t be able to put down.
