Despite being a Play-In Tournament survivor, the Nuggets have had a relatively smooth and drama-free journey to the conference finals. They have avoided many of the injuries that have plagued other teams, had no significant reason to be active at the trade deadline, and secured the best record in the West. Jokic has been a key factor in the Nuggets’ success over the last few years, having almost won the NBA MVP award three years in a row. He has proven to be a better and more durable player than LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but is still without a championship ring.
This marks the rematch of the 2020 Western Conference Finals, played at the Orlando bubble, where these three stars faced each other. The Nuggets have learned from their shortcomings in that series and come into this matchup much wiser. However, the Lakers continue to trend upward in the playoffs, having defeated the second seed Grizzlies and defending champions Warriors, making their road to the conference finals more impressive than the Nuggets’.
The most significant matchup will likely be between Jokic and Davis, as they are two of the most dominant big men in the game. Jokic is a versatile player and heavily relied upon by the Nuggets. However, he does not have the luxury of LeBron James riding with him, which puts the burden of leading the Nuggets predominantly on his shoulders. While Davis is an outstanding shot-blocker, Jokic’s ability to track his own rebounds and his footwork around the rim could make it a challenging matchup for Davis. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Jokic needs to bring his best game to the table because of Davis’ superior athleticism and ability to shoot from beyond the arc.
With his age and multiple seasons of wear and tear, LeBron James’ conditioning will again be a significant factor in this series. Until now, he has demonstrated the same form which we have come to expect of him, and the closer he gets to the championship trophy, the stronger his determination will be. The Nuggets lack a defensive powerhouse who can stop him like Dillon Brooks or Andrew Wiggins, who defended him in previous series. If Aaron Gordon, the possible defender assigned to LeBron, gets into foul trouble, having no adequate backup plan could be detrimental to their defense.
The Nuggets will need Jamal Murray to play at his best, as he did during the 2020 playoffs, to put the Lakers in a precarious position. However, after successfully containing Steph Curry, the Lakers are well-prepared to challenge Murray.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (KCP) is the X-Factor for the Nuggets in this series, as he is now facing his former team. KCP was acquired to provide defense against the Nuggets’ opposition and spread the floor around Jokic. Trading for KCP has been beneficial for the Nuggets, and he should be ready to give an extra boost to his team in this series.
The Nuggets have the best offensive efficiency in the playoffs, scoring 118.7 points per 100 possessions. Meanwhile, The Lakers have allowed only 106.5 points per 100 possessions, representing the best defensive efficiency in the playoffs. It’s a battle between the best offense and best defense in the Western Conference Finals.
Regardless of what previous results indicate, every series brings unique problems, heroes, and storylines. This should not be a quick series, given the determination and skill of both teams. While the Nuggets are the top-seeded and could be playing in their first NBA Finals, they must overcome the Lakers to reach their ultimate goal. However, the Lakers are the team with two high caliber stars that they rely on significantly more than the Nuggets rely on Jokic. It is probable that the Lakers will eventually find their touch and win the series in seven games.
