Netflix has once again come up with a movie that seems to offer a lot of action but almost no real substance in ‘The Mother’. Starring Jennifer Lopez in a lead role, ‘The Mother’ is a typical action-mystery thriller that tells the story of a mercenary assassin who is forced to leave her child and go into hiding since she is a wanted woman by the bad guys whom she used to work for. Beyond this backstory, however, the movie appears to be just another action flick loaded with violence and drama but offering nothing more in terms of ambition and depth.
The movie starts with The Mother being an FBI informant during an arms deal that goes wrong. She is revealed to be pregnant, and after a series of dramatic events, she ultimately ends up moving to Alaska and spending the next 12 years in hiding. When her past comes back to haunt her, she has to do everything in her power to protect her daughter from the enemies who are after her.
What we have here is a boilerplate storyline about a mother’s love for her child set against the backdrop of violence and vendettas. While this basis is decent enough, the film falls short on ambition and depth since it spends most of its time emphasizing the shootouts and chases rather than developing dimensional characters or investing in character nuance.
The movie tries to explore the theme of momhood as a protective power, but it mainly focuses on the visual and technical aspects, leaving the storytelling to chance. Jennifer Lopez, who is credited as a producer, does her best to give her character ‘The Mother’ some depth, but she is let down in almost every scene by a screenplay that seems disinterested in character development and intrigued only by shootouts and chase scenes.
Overall, ‘The Mother’ fails to provide any significant philosophical discussion or depth and instead seems to be a film that adheres to the tried and tested formula of action and drama. As such, it is a movie that you can SKIP.
