Lori Vallow Daybell, the Idaho mother with “doomsday beliefs,” who was on trial for the murder of her two children, Tylee Ryan, 16, and Joshua Vallow, 7, and of conspiring to murder her former husband’s wife, was found guilty by a jury on Friday. The case, which presented an array of unusual details, including Ms. Vallow Daybell’s extremist religious beliefs, captivated the public’s attention both nationally and globally. The verdict, however, comes as small comfort to the families of the victims.

Ms. Vallow Daybell’s trial began on April 3, 2023, after several years of delays and concerns about her mental health. At its core, the prosecution painted Ms. Vallow Daybell as a negligent mother, who believed she was on a “religious mission” to prepare for the end of the world, which she viewed as more important than the well-being of her children. Her extreme religious beliefs were stated as the primary motive behind the murders of her two kids.

According to local news reports, during the trial, the prosecution called over 60 witnesses to provide compelling testimonies. The defense chose not to have Lori testify, and opted not to present any witnesses during the course of the trial. Ms. Vallow Daybell’s lawyers told the judge that they did not believe the prosecution had proven the state’s case, while the prosecutor’s evidence suggested Lori’s guilt.

In addition to her children’s murders, the jury found Lori Vallow Daybell guilty of grand theft and of conspiring to commit first-degree murder in connection with the death of Tammy Daybell, the wife of her then-husband Chad Daybell. Chad Daybell, who is also facing charges related to the children’s deaths, will be tried separately, and still faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.

Ms. Vallow Daybell’s crimes remind us of the dark side of fanaticism, religious or otherwise, and how it can lead people to make terrible decisions. With her apocalyptic beliefs, Lori Vallow Daybell believed that her children were zombies possessed by spirits, and that killing them was necessary. Her twisted views on right and wrong, coupled with a lack of empathy for her young children, made the trial a sorrowful, distressing, and thought-provoking experience.

At this moment, our thoughts are with the families of Tylee, JJ, and Tammy, who will have to live with the tragic loss of their loved ones. The verdict for Lori Vallow Daybell is a reminder that justice can be served, although it cannot bring closure to the victims’ families.
