Huge “Chonkosaurus” Snapping Turtle Discovered on Chicago River

A video of a humongous snapping turtle, nicknamed “Chonkosaurus” has emerged online and taken the internet by storm. The footage shows the turtle leisurely resting on a large chain-strapped across rotting logs in the Chicago River. Joey Santore, who filmed this gargantuan reptile, was in disbelief over its size, explaining in his tweet: “Look at this guy. We got a picture of this most beautiful sight. Look at the size of that … thing,” he says, using an expletive. “Look at that beast. Hey, how ya doing guy? You look good. You’re healthy.” According to Chris Anchor, the chief wildlife biologist with Forest Preserves of Cook County, the snapping turtle is quite rare because of its size. These reptiles, known for their voracious appetite and readiness to eat anything they can wrap their jaws around, will usually not be found lounging on rivers.

The first question that pops into one’s mind is how common are these giant snapping turtles? Anchor suspects that the turtle recently emerged from hibernation, possibly searching for warmth to heat its cold-blooded body. Despite not being able to assess the exact size of the turtle from the video clip alone, Anchor acknowledges that it’s not every day you come across such a turtle. The man who filmed the turtle was pure in awe of the sight, going as far as giving it a name.

Wildlife biologists appreciate the possibility of encountering such reptiles during their walks or research, but Anchor warns that moving too close to the turtles may instigate attacks. These prehistoric-looking reptiles are intriguing, but it’s critical to keep in mind that they’re wild animals capable of inflicting serious harm. Experts advise people never to pick up snapping turtles that are about as big because their aggressive play fights can cause injuries.

In summary, encounters with exotic wildlife can be breathtaking, but it’s crucial to keep in mind that although these beautiful creatures are intriguing, they are wild animals, and it’s best for everyone involved, including the animal, to admire them from a distance. Enjoy them and leave them alone!
