Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1962, Kozik grew up under Spain’s fascist dictator Franco before moving to the United States as a teenager. He started out creating artwork for friends’ bands before moving on to larger silkscreen prints and concert posters. He soon became known for his collaborations with some of the biggest bands in the world, including Pearl Jam and Nirvana. His work was a reflection of his love for punk rock and its DIY ethos, and he quickly became one of the most well-respected graphic designers in the music industry.
In the 1990s, Kozik closed his record label to focus on other media, such as toys, collectibles, and collaborations with major brands like Nike and Swatch. He became chief creative officer of Kidrobot, where he designed over 500 limited edition figures, including his iconic Labbit characters. His artwork inspired a generation of graphic artists and toy designers, and his legacy will live on through his art and the memories of those who knew him.
The passing of Frank Kozik is a great loss to the counterculture community and the art world at large. He was a true original whose influence can be seen across multiple mediums and genres. From his early days creating posters for bands like Nirvana to his later work in toy design and branding, Kozik’s impact on pop culture is immeasurable. His passing is a reminder that even the most influential and creative minds are mortal, and that their legacies are precious and should be cherished.
In closing, we offer our condolences to Kozik’s family and friends, and to the many fans and artists who were inspired by his work. His presence will be deeply missed, but his artistic contributions will remain with us for years to come.
