Khan’s arrest is based on a new warrant obtained by the National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan’s anti-corruption organization. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan accused Khan of having caused the country’s treasury to lose millions of dollars due to illegal land purchases from a tycoon. However, some critics suspect the arrest to be politically motivated, as Khan has been vocal in his opposition to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and has demanded early elections. Khan and his supporters have denounced the charges against him as a Western conspiracy and also challenged the legal basis of the arrest.
Pakistan has seen several confrontations and arrests of politicians over the years, with some viewing the National Accountability Bureau as a tool used by those in power, particularly the military, to suppress political opponents. In fact, when Khan was in power, his government arrested Sharif, then the opposition leader, through the National Accountability Bureau. Furthermore, Pakistan‘s military has frequently intervened in the country’s politics over the years, contributing to the instability and tension seen in the government.
The arrest of Khan has also raised concerns among international leaders, with the European Union urging “restraint and cool headedness” and the United States and the United Kingdom calling for respect for the rule of law and democracy in Pakistan.
Khan is the seventh former Prime Minister to be arrested in Pakistan, with the first being Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was hanged in 1979. Khan’s arrest highlights the need for Pakistan to strengthen its democratic institutions and practices to ensure that politicians and opposition leaders can freely operate in the country without fear of suppression or arbitrary arrest.
As Pakistan struggles with escalating political tensions and violence, it’s important for the government to respect the rule of law and ensure that citizens’ rights to peaceful protest are protected. The arrest of Imran Khan should be seen as a pivotal moment in the country’s history, emphasizing the need to build a strong, transparent, and fair political system that can withstand political turbulence and safeguard democracy.
