Remembering Nick Gilbert: The legacy of Cleveland Cavaliers’ good luck charm
The Cleveland Cavaliers family and NBA community are mourning the loss of 26-year-old Nicolas “Nick” Gilbert, the son of the team’s owner Dan Gilbert, who became the team’s good luck charm at NBA draft lotteries. His death came as he struggled with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that caused non-cancerous tumors to grow on his brain, spinal cord, and skin.
A Showstopper
In 2011, a 14-year-old Nick Gilbert donning a signature bow tie and dark-rimmed glasses became a sensation that won the hearts of Cavaliers fans. At the draft lottery, he became instrumental in leading the Cavaliers to obtain the No. 1 pick, which they used to draft Kyrie Irving, a move that would eventually lead to the team’s first-ever championship in 2016 once LeBron James returned to his hometown team.
A Legacy of Hope
Nick’s zest for life and unwavering spirit of hope and perseverance despite his medical condition captured people’s hearts. He stood up for others diagnosed with NF1 and inspired many to fight and never give up.
In honor of Nick, the Cleveland Cavaliers have dedicated their 2022-23 season to him. The team adorned bowtie emblems on their warmups as a symbol of their love for Nick and as a way to raise awareness for NF1.
A Life Worth Celebrating
Nick’s life was short but impactful. His unwavering spirit and determination to live life to the fullest despite his medical condition serve as a reminder of what it means to be a true champion. Nick’s passing leaves a big void in the hearts of Cleveland Cavaliers fans and the NBA community at large.
A Time for Reflection
Nick’s life is a testament to the human spirit’s strength in the face of adversity. It reminds us that there is always something to look forward to, even in difficult times. It’s easy to lose hope in the face of tragedy, but Nick’s life is a clear indication that hope springs eternal. This season, the Cavaliers will play each game in remembrance of Nick and his legacy of hope, proving that even in loss, we can find ways to celebrate and look to a better future.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gilbert family during this challenging time.
